It’s been one year since the first Zodiac Legacy novel wrapped up (see our review here). During that time, young Steven Lee had done a lot of crazy stuff. He’d traveled to Hong Kong and Greenland, and he’d battled mercenary soldiers and superpowered agents. Along the way, he’d acquired the incredible power of the Tiger.
Similarly, Maxwell (Steven’s arch nemesis) had spent the past year quietly licking his wounds in his Australian sanctum sanctorum. He lost the power of the Dragon when he tangled with the Project Zodiac kids, but everybody knew he would return someday. Like the Great Society, he was conspicuous in his absence.
Steven’s Tiger power gave him extraordinary strength, speed, and agility. But he also possessed a superhuman sense of danger. It was his version of Spidey-sense. Every instinct in his body was telling him that trouble was lurking around the corner. And he was right.
Despite his awesome astrological powers, Steven was still prone to making stupid mistakes (he was a 15-year-old kid, after all). When he detects another Tiger energy signature in Germany, he abandons his Project Zodiac pals and buys a one-way ticket to Berlin.
Naturally, Steven stumbles into a trap as soon as he steps off the airport tarmac. “Use a Tiger to trap a Tiger,” smirks one of Maxwell’s sneaky undercover operatives. Once Steven is abducted, the rest of the Zodiac kids fall quickly to Maxwell and his elite Vanguard mercenaries.
Somehow over the past twelve months, Maxwell had acquired a jiànyú. And that was bad news. The ancient magical gewgaw enabled him to capture the power of 10 of China’s elusive celestial creatures – Tiger, Ox, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, and Dragon. When the transfer was complete, you could hardly call him human any longer.
“We blew it,” admits Jasmine, the founder of Project Zodiac. But fear not, True Believers. It looks like Stan Lee and Stuart Moore are furiously working on multiple sequels. Maxwell may have outwitted his adversaries in this volume, but you can bet there’s a contingency plan in the works. The title of this novel is The Dragon’s Return. But we have a feeling the Dragon will return again and again and again and again.
